Central Demolition 30 Aboyne 45
Ambitious, Crazy? One of them, the sole reason for entering an U18 team into the SWRU cup this year. Knowing Grangemouth had about 7 girls of their own, a handful playing in Stirling, Clackmannan, Kirkcaldy and Linlithgow it was decided to enter a team under the banner of Central Girls and Schools. The unluck of the Draw had us draw Away to Oban for their first ever fixture and only a week to pull together all the players. Luck was then on our side when Oban withdrew and automatically put us through to round 2 and gave us a little more time to field a team. We then found out we faced Aboyne AWAY lol, Mairi rallied the troops and we look to have a full 15 at one point, but with Schools having holidays and kids being off due to in-service days and a few last minute cancellations we were down to 9. The cup tie had to be defaulted BUT a friendly did take place to give the girls their first ever run out as a combined team. The girls thought Central Demolition was a good name and could be a potential sponsor for this newly founded team?
Central Ds took the field after a long journey in the mini bus kindly driven by Auntie Ems and automatically dominated the set piece. Strong running from Mairi, Ashley and Sarah punched the play well into Aboynes half almost scoring in the corner. Unfortunately the ball was picked up and run the full length of the pitch by Aboynes speedy winger. Central Ds answered that score with a great try from Ashley in the corner. Scorning herself for scoring it so far away from the posts she said she couldn’t kick but gave it a bash – unconverted!
The sun was shining and all the girls were smiling and loving the fact some of them were getting their first ever real game of rugby! Fantastic tackling from new comers Laura and Hazel on the wings stopped Aboyne in their tracks several times. But speed on the wings saw Aboyne cross the line again after sprinting the length of the pitch.
Kristie switch to her more comfortable position in the backs and switching in Hazel and Holly to the scrum saw us win many scrums against the head. Great ball control with the feet of the scrum gave number 9, Sarah good ball to keep Ashley punching up the centre linking well with Megan. Megan showed great handling skills by picking up a very difficult pass popping out to Kirsty (KP) on the wing nearly sending her in for a score. Unfortunately the ball went astray and was picked up by Aboyne. Megan although the youngest of the group, did not look out of place at all. It was also apparent she has been on a rugby pitch before. She took the ball into contact several times and made good ground. . . Ashley scored again in this first part of the game.
Half time score 15 each.
Memory bit hazy but Aboyne scored another try down the wing before it was answered yet again by Sarah taking a go at the line by herself from a scrum and scoring her first ever ‘real try’ as she called it.. Playing so well herself in my opinion would cope easily with the rigors of adult rugger at Kirkcaldy! Every time Aboyne attacked Central put in some fantastic tackles through Grangemouths Kristie and Laura stopping them in their tracks but the width of the pitch and their speed took the outside easily.
KP went from wing into the scrum and got a little more of the ball as one thing central will need to work on is getting the ball passed out to the wings. Kristie had been saying this all game but the ball hogging forwards and top try scorer Ash (scoring again in the second half) never managed to get it out to the other backs as often as they would have liked.
Mairi ripped ball from Aboyne all day and got her own try with a bit oh bashing in the forwards at some point in the second half. Holly had a wee twist of her ankle but after some ice went back on for the remainder of the game, she played consistently well throughout the game. Also crossing the line for a try of her own, it is very apparent that she is clocking up experience playing women’s rugby at Stirling County in the NDL. Ashley came out of nowhere an hit an Aboyne girl in a crunching tackle that actually hurt herself the plonker! Aboyne scored a few more times, always up the wing - Central found this blitzing pace impossible to defend but managed to keep the final score to a very impressive 30-45.
